A Wildlife Photography Adventure!

July 29th, 2011 by woodlandtrails

Minnesota Wildlife Connection, located in Sandstone, Minnesota, just minutes from Woodland Trails, maintains a variety of whild animals for photographers.  Their collection includes racoons and porcupines to cougars and timber wolves.

The farm caters to professional photographers but several times a year they have a session for amateurs.  Woodland Trails innkeeper, John O’Reilly, and his daughter, Stacy, participated in one of these events.    Here’s their story.

Now, Lee Greenly, owner of Minnesota Wildlife Connection, has just announced dates for amateur sessions during the rest of 2011 and all of 2012.   See them here.

For an unforgetable adventure, combine a stay at Woodland Trails with a photo session at Minnesota Wildlife Connection!

Jim Jordan's Buck

Many guests enjoy seeing the replica of Jim Jordan’s world record buck hanging over the fireplace at Woodland Trails and hearing his unique story.

Now, the whole world will be able to hear the story.  A film crew was here a couple of months ago preparing a segment on the buck for Bass Pro Shops King of Bucks program.  The segment will be aired on the Outdoor Channel on these dates in 2011:

Wednesday, July 13th at 11:30am
Thursday, July 14th at 7:30am
Sunday, July 17th at 11:30am

We have been promised a CD copy of the segment so if you miss it at one of the times above, you’ll be able to see the segment on your next stay at Woodland Trails!

We have fish!

June 13th, 2011 by woodlandtrails

Our private pond, Grace Lake Too, offers catch and release fishing … sometimes.  We say sometimes because the otters also enjoy the pond.  These entertaining critters are fun to watch; they have been known to amuse guests by swimming beside the paddle boat like dolphins.

Small-clawed OtterBut, otters are also fish eating machines!   They are capable of catching every fish in our pond, from the largest bass to the smallest minnow.  The good news is that the otters do not live here full time.  Rather, they come up here periodically from their permanent home in the St. Croix River, which is less than a mile away.   It can be a few weeks to several months between their visits.

We have just restocked the pond with bass and bluegills.  So catch and release fishing by guests should be good over the next few weeks, until the otters return.

Woodland Trails staff member, Charlie Brown (Yes, that is his real name. In fact, he is Charlie Brown IV!) with one of the bass that went into Grace Lake Too on Friday.

Marcia, with husband Jeff, shows off the bluegill she caught on Saturday.

So bring your fishing equipment, or borrow our cane poles, to try your luck in Grace Lake Too!

The Trumpeter Swans are back!

May 1st, 2011 by woodlandtrails

Two years ago, we enjoyed watching a family of Trumpeter Swans on our Beaver Pond.  The adults raised two cygnets.  All four stayed into November and left just before freeze-up.

Last spring the water in the Beaver Pond was low (remember the dry spring we had?).  The swans came back but stayed for just a few days and left.

This year, the pond is again full to the brim and the swans have returned, hopefully to again raise a family and entertain guests!

We’re Changing!

April 6th, 2011 by woodlandtrails

We hope that guests who have stayed with us many times have seen at least one new thing on each visit.

We’ve just completed some remodeling that we hope everyone will enjoy.

It started when Deb and Scott were visiting.  All of the furniture was removed from the Great Room and Dining Room.  The area rugs were just about to go.

Then, in came the floor finishers.  We’ have been really lucky with the wood floor because it has stood up very well.  Nonetheless, after eight years, it was time for a touch-up.

Finally, Sandra could show off the changes:  Refinished floor in the Great Room and Dining Room; new carpet on the stairway and second floor landing; new carpet in the Winterberry Room; and, of course, re-arranged furniture.

Next time you visit, we hope you’ll approve of the changes!

Spring Bird Migration Is ON!

March 9th, 2011 by woodlandtrails

Enjoy the spring bird migration at Woodland Trials B&B!

The migration begins in early March, even before the ice goes off our pond, Grace Lake Too.   The annual finale to the migration is in mid-May when the hummingbirds arrive.

Trumpter swans by LouAnn Wheeler

An early sign of spring is the arrival of male wood ducks that come to look for good nesting sites.  Hopefully they will choose one of our six nesting boxes erected just for them. The trumpter swans also come early.   They sit on the ice during the day to stake out their claim to an area.  At night, they fly back to open water on the lower St. Croix.   Two years ago, a pair of swans chose our beaver pond as their family home where they raised two cygnets.  Last year, the water level in the pond was too low and they moved on.  This spring we again have plenty of water so we hope they stay!

You can enjoy the sights of spring migration right outside our windows as birds stop by the feeders and ducks land on Grace Lake Too.  There are binoculars in every room and in the Great Room for your use.

Bob & Linda striking their bird observing pose for the camera.

Many more birds can be observed and enjoyed out on our trails.  Last year, Bob & Linda, from Paynesville, counted 49 species of birds during one four-hour walk!

Even more birds can be observed and enjoyed at Crex Meadows.  Located just 20 minutes from Woodland Trails, Crex Meadows is 30,000 acres of bird sanctuary.

For birders — whether casaual or serious — spring migration is the best time of year!

Marriage Proposals at Woodland Trails

February 28th, 2011 by woodlandtrails

Matt & Kim are engaged!

One of the neat things about being innkeepers at Woodland Trails is sharing key times with guests …. honeymoons, wedding anniversaries, birthdays and proposals of marriage.

This past Saturday, Matt proposed to Kim.  He was the 11th young man to proposal marriage here and, happily, all 11 young ladies have accepted!

Matt’s approach was a little different than anyone else’s in that there was a text message involved.  Later in the evening, Kim had gone to their room while Matt was still in the Great Room.  From there he sent Kim a text message saying, “Come back up here, please.”  When Kim joined him in front of the fireplace, Matt proposed!

Cory's proposal table.

Other proposals have been made in the couple’s room and out by the pond gazebo.  Several young men have arranged to have the ring hidden on the land so it could be found with one of our GPS receivers as the couple was supposedly looking for a lucky coin.  Cory, from Minnetonka, went a step further and arranged to have us set up a table at the end of one of the trails with flowers, champagne and a treasure chest containing the ring.

But, whether simple or elaborate, the proposals of marriage here at Woodland Trails have been memorable for both the couple and for us!
